Before Mexico City existed, the canals of Xochimilco already did. This system of chinampas — artificial islands built by the original peoples of the Valley of Mexico — fed Tenochtitlan for centuries and is still fertile ground today for flowers, vegetables, and wildlife.

Getting on a trajinera means stepping into a different rhythm. The boats, hand-painted with women's names and flowers, drift slowly through canals lined with ahuejote trees. Along the way come corn vendors, floating mariachi trios, and other trajineras packed with whole families, always laughing.

Xochimilco was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, not only for its historical value but for representing one of the last traces of the lake landscape that once covered the entire valley. Walking, or rowing, through here is touching a version of Mexico that survives, chinampa by chinampa, against the advance of the city.

This magnet was made to remind you of that day on the water. Scan it whenever you want to come back.
